Support Kenyan youth in Machakos by coaching handball and other sports

A player catches a handball while a large group of children stand in the background watching a handball coach give a lesson.

We use sport as a developmental tool to help children build life skills, environmental skills and develop their talents.

Handball is our tool to empower youth. Our vision is to promote a diverse and inclusive sporting environment through the team sport of handball and to impart self-esteem, skills and knowledge to the next generation.

We want to contribute to a world where young people grow up in peace and have the skills to shape a positive future for themselves and others. We promote self-respect, respect for others and respect for the environment as the main tenets of our call to action.

Machakos: The volunteer here will have the opportunity to teach young children in a school in the morning and coach handball in 3 different schools and a community club in the evening, each on their own day.

Two women are standing at a table with the project leader in front of a large metal pot of maize porridge, preparing lunch together. Children playing in a sports tournament can be seen in the background.
Exercise is fun, but it is also exhausting and makes you hungry: together with project helpers, delicious lunches of ugali and vegetables are prepared during a community sport tournament.
A mixed youth handball team is in the midst of an attack in front of the goal on a dry grass pitch in a residential area.
A volunteer sports coach takes a selfie surrounded by smiling children from her sports project.
A group of boys and girls play handball together on a dusty court in front of an apartment building.
A group of children and teenagers in flip-flops are practising handball in a residential area on an open space with a bumpy and stony surface.

General

Kenyans are generally overly friendly and welcome visitors wholeheartedly, which can sometimes be too much if you are not used to being the centre of attention.

Dress code: You should wear clothes that are not too revealing and that cover most of your body.

The project is in a low income community where you can experience poverty and middle income at the same time. Our roads are not so good, but we have electricity, water and habitable houses.

We have different means of transport like Matatu, some very colourful and some with very loud music, we have buses, Boda Boda which is a motorbike, TukTuk and also private cars/taxis.

We have four seasons in Kenya, the hot season which is supposed to be from January to March, followed by short rains from March to June, the cold season from July to September and heavy rains from October to December, but due to climate change it is a bit hard to predict the seasons.

We are close to the only national park in a city in the world, Nairobi National Park. In your free time you can visit the city of Nairobi which is 1 hour drive away.

Health & Safety

  • In Machakos area our source of water is dug boreholes, the water is a bit salty and therefore we can only use it for cleaning but we also have water points where we buy drinking water. We have electricity in most households.
  • The area is safe but you should be careful not to walk alone at night.
  • Our public transport is safe and cheap. You should always be careful not to be overcharged. There are various means of transport from buses, boda boda motorbikes, matatu mini buses.
  • We are not a malaria zone area, no lake and rivers near us.
